MELanin

The Secret of how it Started

Where did I begin? That’s a fantastic question, and the truth is that I genuinely wanted to portray myself in a way that gave me self-assurance and empowerment. Something I could hang on my wall that would make me smile because it boosted my self-esteem and gave me confidence. I wanted to see the person I wanted to be. Someone with gorgeous skin and a great afro.

I aspired to be that !!!

My aunty came over after I finished a sketch and informed me that she loved it and would pay for it. I created a piece of artwork for her, shared it on Snapchat, and invited people to contact me if they were interested in having something similar created for them. As a result, I received praise from relatives and friends who requested that I create a piece of artwork for them. My very first purchase was made in December 2018, and I launched my Instagram account in 2019 to share my artwork and talent.

The phrase “MELanin” , which I use to emphasize my appreciation for black representation, is a mix of my name Melody with the word Melanin.

ARTS & CRAFTS

Knitting & Crochet
Painting & Watercolour
drawing & digital art

The various stages of my creative process are shown here

First

I tried watercolour for the first time with the hair and painted the rest.

This was definitely a draft.

I really loved seeing big afro’s, it is totally shown in this art piece

Second

Second time around I wanted to add words that made me feel good about myself.

I used markers to test out how it would look before actually painting it.

Third

This image is more of a representation of how I actually am.

I really put my personality, energy, and ambition into this work of art. I say this because there are small details about this that I enjoy but no one else will see or notice

There are definitely other variations inbetween this art piece and the second one.
